COVID-19 has had a significant impact on Auckland Transport and the wider Auckland Council whānau. As a result, Auckland Council is implementing an Emergency Budget which has reduced Auckland Transport’s budget.

Unfortunately, this means that all projects in Warkworth are delayed and have now been put on hold.

We appreciate these changes may cause uncertainty for landowners and we will be in touch when we have more information to share. If you have any immediate concerns please contact us on our freephone number, 0800 GROW AKL (0800 4769 255) or email

Find out more about the future transport network for Warkworth

In 2019, Auckland Transport and Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency released an Indicative Strategic Transport Network to support growth in Warkworth.

The network in Warkworth provides the community with safe and attractive travel choices including reliable access to public transport services and social and business destinations.

This transport network integrates with Auckland Council’s development of a structure plan that identifies the mix and location of housing, employment, retail, commercial and community facilities in north, south and north east Warkworth.

The transport network is a 30-year plan for a well-connected system that will deliver great safety, accessibility and liveability outcomes in Warkworth. It includes:

  • Public transport facilities, including new proposed transport interchanges.
  • A walking and cycling network, including the Mahurangi river shared path.
  • A proposed south-western area ‘link’ road connecting to a proposed southern interchange, to provide improved access to proposed residential and business land in south Warkworth.
  • Improvements to the state highway network, including a proposal for a southern interchange from Ara Tūhono – the Pūhoi to Warkworth motorway.

More information is in our latest newsletter Warkworth Transport Connections [PDF, 590 KB].

Detailed descriptions of some of the projects included in the transport network plan are available below:

Other priority projects

A number of other priority projects are already underway to support growth in the short term.

The opening of the Ara Tūhono - Pūhoi to Warkworth motorway and Te Honohono ki Tai - Matakana Link Road towards the end of 2021 will move highway traffic away to the west of the township and will immediately reduce pressure on the section of State Highway 1 that goes through the existing Warkworth township.

More information on these other priority projects can be found at:

Next steps

Over the next few years our programme will be progressing more detailed investigations and further engagement with project partners, stakeholders, landowners and the community, and will begin staged route protection [PDF, 54 KB] processes across all future urban growth areas and transport projects.
